Submissions

At this time, West Virginia South will consider accepting unsolicited articles and/or photographs for the magazine. We highly suggest writers and photographers read a copy of WVS before attempting to contribute to it. It is also suggested you pitch your idea to us via e-mail before you spend time and energy researching and writing your article. We can generally tell from your idea whether or not we would accept your completed article; however, we reserve the right to reject articles for any reason. We also reserve the right to edit articles for length, grammar, style and accuracy. WVS uses AP (Associated Press) style, and it is recommended your articles adhere to this format. We cannot be responsible for returning unsolicited materials. Any submission may be rejected at any time and for any reason deemed appropriate by our editor in order to maintain the integrity and vision of our publication. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

Upon acceptance and once edited, freelance writers will be paid at 10 cents per word. Preferred length is no longer than 1,500 to 2,000 words.

Freelance photographers will be paid upon acceptance at $25 per photograph. In the event your photo is selected for use on the cover of our magazine, compensation will be $50.

Freelance writers who submit their own photographs will need to address compensation on a case-by-case basis with the editor. It is not always within our budget to pay writers for photographs and stories.

Freelancers will need to complete W-9 forms for the business office of Beckley Newspapers. Payments will be mailed on or around the date of publication.
